ICQ es un cliente de mensajería instantánea, similar a los que fueron en su momento AIM, MSN Messenger o Google Talk. ICQ, debe su nombre a un juego de palabras (en inglés), “I seek you”, “Te busco”. refiriéndose a la forma en que ICQ se puede utilizar para encontrar viejos o nuevos amigos y comunicarse con ellos.

La mensajería instantánea ha existido de una forma u otra desde principios de la década de 1970. Eran sistemas que se comunicaban directamente entre dos personas y, a veces, utilizaban un servidor central. Con el tiempo, esta forma se violvió menos popular, aunque ciertas formas, como Internet Relay Chat (IRC), siguieron siendo muy populares (hoy en día se utilizan) hasta el advenimiento de la mensajería moderna.

En 1996, una empresa israelí llamada Mirabilis lanzó su producto de mensajería instantánea: ICQ. Mirabilis fue financiado principalmente por uno de los padres del fundador, así como por otros pequeños inversores. La empresa tuvo que invertir muy poco en marketing, ya que la app se volvió viral rápidamente.

ICQ fue totalmente innovador para la época. Fue el primer cliente de mensajería instantánea que realmente utilizó una interfaz gráfica de usuario (GUI) y fue fácil de instalar y usar para casi cualquier persona.
ICQ utilizaba un número de identificación único (UIN) para cada usuario. Esto permite que un usuario de ICQ cambie toda la información sobre su cuenta (nombre de pantalla, dirección de correo electrónico, nombre real, ciudad de origen) y aún así tener la misma identificación principal.
En 1997, America Online lanzó su mensajería instantánea gráfica, AIM. En 1998, solo dos años después de la creación de ICQ, America Online adquirió el programa de Mirabilis por $407 millones de dolares, a pesar de que no tenía ingresos en absoluto. Esto permitió a America Online tener una hegemonía virtual sobre la mensajería instantánea hasta que Google Talk y MSN Messenger comenzaron a ganar cuota de mercado.

ICQ todavía existe (después de 26 años) y se actualiza periódicamente. Van por la versión 10, y su última actualización fue en septiembre del 2021, podés descargarlo desde https://icq.softonic.com/?ex=CAT-3508.5
Obviamente ya no es usada como en su época; y hoy en día las app más utilizadas; al menos en Argentina son WhatsApp y Telegram.
